英语一直是我最头痛的一门功课。因为在我看来有无数个毫无规律的英语单词要背诵，还有那莫名其妙的听力，都令我烦恼不已。但这学期我发现我似乎对这门讨厌的功课产生了兴趣。
事情的起因是爸爸出差到北京，给我带回了一台读书郎英语同步读书机。我立刻被它漂亮的外表吸引住了，因为它像一台高档的笔记本电脑。打开读书机，左边是音标，分为元音、辅音；右边是26个英语字母。最大的好处是它可以下载我上课用的PEP教材。妈妈让我打开英语课本，翻到第1页，把读书机中的页码调至相同页码，我再用那神奇的信号笔一点，点到哪儿，读书机就发出标准的读音，点第二遍时它就译出这个单词的中文含义，真是太神奇了！
刚开始几天，我每天一放学就抱着这台读书郎，渐渐地新鲜劲也就过去了。妈妈看准了时机，立即调动我的积极性，把老师当天教的英语单词分批教我，并慢慢告诉我这个字母在单词中所发的音。这样，日积月累，慢慢地我对有些字母的发音规律也有所掌握。正像妈妈所说的那样，一旦你会读准这个单词，那么这个单词的一半已被记住，只要稍一用心，就可记住全部。妈妈告诉我：学习英语要循序渐进，因为记忆会衰减，所以学单词时，先学一遍，过一会儿复习一遍，到第二天再复习一遍，一星期、一个月内再次复习，这样能把短期记忆变成长期记忆。这种方法叫作思马德记忆。按照妈妈所说的.方法，我试了一下。哎，果真有效果！渐渐地我对背诵单词有点窍门了。这个学期六个单元所要求的四会单词，我全部做到了会听、说、读、写。
因为背诵单词有了明显的进步，得到了老师的表扬，我的学习热情倍增，对听力也产生了兴趣。现在我拿到听力课文，不象以前那样手忙脚乱，而是先把课文、图案看一遍。如果是选择题，我会看清图案，了解这几幅图的大致含义，再听录音。我现在能抓住几个重点词语与图案进行对照，基本能做到准确无误。对阅读也同样，抓住几个关键词语和下面的问题进行对照。

每天清晨，我都会被爷爷那叽哩呱啦的英语声给吵醒。你肯定会疑惑不解，告诉你吧，我爷爷随着奥运会的一天天临近，竟然每天早上五点多钟就开始学英语了。
爷爷常说："奥运会是我们中国人的骄傲。"到时肯定会有许多外国人来我们张家港观光旅游。如果走在大街上老外问咱们问题，咱们听不懂，也不知道怎么说，肯定会让他们笑话的。于是，爷爷就去"欧亚"报了个老年英语培训班。由于爷爷的英语基础很差，学起来就特别的困难，再加上爷爷的一个门牙也掉了，发起音来更是费劲，而且还要闹笑话。虽然有这么多困难，但是爷爷很坚持，天天抱着复读机听个不停，还乐此不疲。
为了把英语学好，爷爷要求我和他用英语互相问候和对话。比如：每天早上他看到我起床就说一声："Goodmorning（早上好）！"下午放学回家就说："Goodafternoon（下午好）！"等简单的句子。有一次，我给爷爷倒了杯茶，他连忙说："Thankyou（谢谢）！"结果说成了"坦克油"，把我逗的捧腹大笑，差点把刚喝的水给喷了出来。在一旁吃饭的老爸更是笑得前俯后仰。奶奶也一边笑一边拍打着爷爷说："老头子，你都这么大年纪了，普通话都说不标准，还学英语呢，哈哈哈——"。爷爷故作镇定的说："这有什么好笑的，不就是把音读的重了一点嘛！"我连忙告诉爷爷说："爷爷，如果你把音读重了，就有可能变成另外一个意思，那样的话，外国人就有可能理解错误的。"爷爷听了迫不及待的让我教他，我耐心的一遍又一遍教他发音。虽然他的发音还是不怎么标准，可他坚持不懈的精神值得我们全家人赞叹。
爷爷身体不太好，还有糖尿病，医生叮嘱过爷爷要保证睡眠的充足，可爷爷为了学好英语，晚上仍然坚持去上老年英语培训班。爸爸也曾劝他多休息，担心过分的劳累会影响他的身体。但他坚定的对我们全家人说："为了北京的奥运，再大的困难也要坚持！"
在爷爷的'不懈努力下，他的英语水平已有了一定的进步，基本的一些口语他都能比较流利的说出来。值得骄傲的是，在爷爷的带动下，我们小区里的一些老年人都开始学起了英语，报上了老年英语培训班。
爷爷不仅有中国人的骨气，还具有坚持不懈的精神。爷爷这种活到老学到老的精神，真值得我佩服！

Nowadays, it is not rare that celebrities from all works of life are employed as guest professors in universities. And we can always see reports about this in newspapers, magazines and other news media.
Some people see it as a win-win situation. On the one hand, celebrities can share their successful stories with students, which can broaden students’ horizon and inspire them to work harder. On the other hand, being visiting professors of universities, the celebrities can make themselves known to more people. However, other people disapprove this practice. They argue that universities’ attention of inviting celebrities to be professors is to enhance the schools’ fame instead of improving the quality of education, and some celebrities are not qualified to be professors.
In my view, just as a coin has two sides, the inviting of celebrities as guest professors has both good and bad effects. Thus I think colleges should evaluate the possible results thoroughly, and their choices should be based on the improvement of teaching standards and students’ development.

Nowadays we see supermodels on almost every magazine cover and one might wonder what life will be like being one of them. Such assumption may be painful for most of the magazine readers who are already over the age when they can get taller. In response to the ”Getting taller trend”, some goes so far as to pay doctors to cut their legs open and let surgeries do the job to get just two centimeters’ higher.
In spite of all these that are happening, some of my taller friends desire to give up this superiority for they just don’t want to be the center of the crowd, saying that they would kill to be a 4 feet child. Girls, maybe you can’t remember the time when you were younger and you need to jump really hard to catch a glimpse of up-the-table world? But being taller, even the upper world of the refrigerator top is no longer a myth and your mom and dad can’t hide your snacks up there any more! As time goes on, you can easily see on the table the beautiful lavenders or lilies stretching themselves in their own fragrant smell, the shining toaster popping out warm tasty toast, or the little drops of water glittering under bright sunshine after your mom wipes the table. Don’t you just love to see every phase of the moon even when they are not that high up in the sky?
Well, I do. Being a 5 ft 10 myself, I am also taking the advantage of buying a larger outfit at a same price. Also, I get a cleaner view of the blackboard even when sitting far away from it. I run faster, jump higher and can think positively. I am proud to say that I possess the ability to see the upside of almost everything. I guess it is because I am closer to the clear blue sky above our heads.
