Three-quarters of the Earth＇s fresh water supply is still tied up in glacial ice, a reservoir of untapped fresh water so immense that it could sustain all the rivers of the world for 1,000 years.

　　Floating on the oceans every year are 7,659 trillion metric tons of ice encased in 10000 icebergs that break away from the polar ice caps, more than ninety percent of them from Antarctica. Huge glaciers that stretch over the shallow continental shelf give birth to icebergs throughout the year. Icebergs are not like sea ice, which is formed when the sea itself freezes, rather, they are formed entirely on land, breaking off when glaciers spread over the sea. As they drift away from the polar region, icebergs sometimes move mysteriously in a direction opposite to the wind, pulled by subsurface currents. Because they melt more slowly than smaller pieces of ice, icebergs have been known to drift as far north as 35 degrees south of the equator in the Atlantic Ocean.

　　To corral them and steer them to parts of the world where they are needed would not be too difficult. The difficulty arises in other technical matters, such as the prevention of rapid melting in warmer climates and the funneling of fresh water to shore in great volume. But even if the icebergs lost half of their volume in towing, the water they could provide would be far cheaper than that produced by desalinization, or removing salt from water.

　　在我上三年级的时候，我就开始学习英语了。但我总不听，最大的原因还是因为我们的英语老师。六年过去了，我对她还是没什么印象，差不多只能记个大概，姓牛，即胖又矮，头发还是大波浪，染得黄黄的，我记得那时特别讨厌她，因为她的女儿在二班，我在三班，她特别偏心，课又讲的简淡无味，我一点兴趣都没有，上课时，不是发呆就是开小差，导致我的英语成绩达到我这么多年的最低谷，哎，一百分的卷子我只能考个四十几。当时好无奈的；就连最简单的单词都不会，应用一句我妈妈的话‘背单词就像要个你肉一样。’

　　你可以想象到到了什么地步。最好的一次也就刚刚及格。太惨了。我经常这样感叹。可又有什么办法呢，看到字母就头疼，就这样，小学的三年过去了。

　　我升进了初中，初中的英语老师是位男老师，姓官，叫官云飞，戴个眼镜，文质彬彬的样子，一眼望去，猜不出来是位教英语的老师，倒有点像教数学的。听说他挺负责的，家长们都求爷爷拜奶奶的'要把孩子送到他的班级。我都不知道是哪位路过的神仙降到了我的头上，真想对天大笑三声，心里的小算盘打得当当响，想着我的英语成绩有着落了。

　　开学的第一天，我早早的去了学校报到，第一节课便是班主任的自我介绍，他微笑着说了自己的名字，还给我们讲了一个他第一次给学生上课时的情景，我们都笑了。

　　正式上课时，他挺严肃的，在课堂上不苟言笑，可是我毕竟是一点基础都没有的人，还是不懂。开始采取措施，方案1；方案2；方案3……额，没用。

　　我开始买关于英语方面的书，什么语法啦、词汇啦、技能啦。几乎各种方面我都有。然而，有些我都看不懂，只有去问老师啦。第一次月考考的是预备教材，超简单的那种。闭着眼睛都能考好。破天荒的，还是一百分的卷子，我居然考了92的高分。虽然，几乎没有不及格的。额，不过还是给了我很高的自信心。

　　初二，因为某种原因，我转学了，转到了三十三中学。又换了一个英语老师，姓严，叫严斌。【同学们私下叫他斌哥】三十三中的骨干教师，精英。英语对他来说，比汉语还简单。他完全可以去当一名职业翻译。

　　我们经常说，我们的英语老师在这里实在是屈才了。额，许多老师也这样说。我们也是这样认为的。但是他教书还是非常严厉的，老师从不把课下的情绪带到课堂上来，这是他教书的一大优点。他的公开课总是上榜，他自己也总被编上优秀教师，他可以教我英语，真是我八辈子修来的福气。呵呵，好像太夸张了一点。

　　但是啊，他的实力绝对是一流的。教书好的没话讲，要是他想把一个同学的英语成绩提高上来，那不过一个月，这位同学的英语成绩保证能上升。要是不完成他布置的任务，那受到的惩罚将是加倍的，要抄就要抄个五十一百遍的。这两三天的下课时间就别想玩了，埋头苦抄吧。搞得不好还会被老师一顿臭骂，再要严重一点的话，就把你家长请来学校和老师谈谈，谈到最后回家也免不了一顿打，哎，有时老师就是这么无情的。

　　好可怜的，被罚抄的同学就只有抄，在夏天还好，要是在冬天的话，那抄就可怜了，手指冻的让人不敢瞧。导致后来我们做题特别小心，就怕这后果。

　　英语，也在慢慢长进着。
